Phylloxera and Grape Industry Board of South Australia

Welcome

Welcome to the Phylloxera and Grape Industry Board website. Here you will learn about the small but deadly grapevine pest, phylloxera (fil-ox-era), which wiped out millions of acres of grapevines across Europe in the mid-1800s and changed the destiny of grapegrowing in Australia when it arrived in Victoria in 1877.

You can also find out about the work of the Phylloxera and Grape Industry Board of South Australia - established in 1899 and the only body of its type in the world. Funded by the state's grapegrowers, it carries out important projects in the areas of phylloxera prevention, early detection, vineyard biosecurity and education.

If you are already familiar with the Board and with phylloxera, you may have visited the website for detailed information on how to prevent phylloxera from entering your vineyard, or how to protect your vineyard by planting on phylloxera resistant rootstocks.

The site also provides comprehensive winegrape industry statistical information for South Australia: annual production figures, plantings, prices and supply-demand forecasts, as well as some general viticultural topics - particularly relating to pests and diseases.

If you wish to report any suspicious or unusual-looking pest or disease symptom, or any activity that you think contravenes South Australian quarantine laws, please phone the Emergency Plant Pest Hotline on 1800 084 881. Quick reporting is the key to preventing a major outbreak of a pest or disease that could seriously affect our winegrape industry. Calls to the hotline are free (except from mobiles).
